There are four steps to studying at HfG Karlsruhe:

1. Course and Portfolio Advice

A portfolio including selected works is one of the requirements in order to apply at the university (practical subjects), or the submission of a motivation letter (theory). At the beginning of the year, interested students can receive in-depth advice on their portfolios in the respective courses of study.

Course and Portfolio Advice

2. Application

The complete documents including a motivation text for application and portfolio must be handed in accordingly

  • for Media Art and Product Design in the second application round to May 31 (cut-off date) in person or by post
  • for the theory course from April 15 to May 31 (cut-off date) in person or by post
  • for all other praxis-based courses from April 1 to April 30 (cut-off date) in person or by post

Application Procedure

3. Examination for Aptitude and Admission

If all entry requirements are met, artistic or theoretical aptitude will be tested in a multi-phase process.

Examination for Aptitude and Admission

4. Enrollment

Enrollment always takes place from 1–20 October for the winter semester.

The academic freedom of non-modular course studies at HfG Karlsruhe means that Bachelor and Master courses are not offered. The studies are concluded with a Diplom or a Magister. Full Bologna compatibility is ensured and the degrees are recognized internationally.

Requirements for Course Admission
  • general or subject-specific higher education qualification or a comparable qualification (a technical college qualification does not qualify)
  • passing the entrance examination
