The installation "The Ugly Universe" emerged from the hybrid performance of the same name, which was developed as part of the seminar "The New Play" at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe during the WS 2021 semester, which was dominated by the lockdown. The multimedia production is based on the text by the author Laura Naumann, was created in cooperation with the Staatstheater Karlsruhe and was performed in April 2021.

The theme of the play - the emergence and impact of conspiracy theories on the Internet and social platforms and their effects - was also congenially implemented in social platforms as well as in public space + livestream.

The spatial installation created for the tour traces the atmosphere of the piece and shows the multifaceted realization of the performance by means of collage of the video documentation. Fragmentarily, the stories of the characters meet and are visually reassembled. The result is an interpretation and documentation of the piece that takes up the post-apocalyptic world of the protagonists.

The production was developed by Giulia Bertolino, Yifan Su, Eike Buff, Josephine Gerhardt, Gloria Müller, Wiebke Müller and Ewa Wasilewska and supervised by Prof. Constanze Fischbeck (HfG), Anna Haas and Eivind Haugland (Staatstheater).

The production has now been translated into a spatial installation by Josephine Gerhardt and Wiebke Mueller. Together with the video documentation by Eike Buff, the multi-layered nature of the production and the various narrative strands of the story are to become visible.
