Die Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe (HfG) wurde am 15. April 1992 eröffnet. Sie wurde gemeinsam mit dem Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM) in Karlsruhe während der Jahre 1989 bis 1992 von Prof. Dr. Heinrich Klotz gegründet. Diese einmalige Verbindung von Lehr-, Forschungs- und Ausstellungsinstitutionen entspricht der neuen künstlerischen und pädagogischen Aufgabe, die traditionellen Künste auf die Medientechnologie und die elektronischen Herstellungsverfahren zu beziehen.

Seit dem Jahr 2001 ist Prof. Dr. Peter Sloterdijk Rektor der HfG Karlsruhe: "Das Programm der Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe ist nicht festgelegt auf bestimmte Tendenzen und Richtungen in der Praxis und in der Theorie der Künste oder gar auf einen Stilbegriff. Die demokratische Struktur der Gesellschaft wie auch das moderne Kommunikationssystem schließen solche Festlegungen und Dogmen aus. Pluralistische Offenheit ist die Basis des Lernens und Lehrens an der Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe."

Am 28. Januar 2008 bescheinigte der Wissenschaftsrat im Rahmen einer umfassenden Hochschul-Evaluation der HfG Karlsruhe ein ausgezeichnetes Ausbildungskonzept. In seiner Bewertung hob der Wissenschaftsrat besonders die Innovationsfähigkeit, Flexibilität und soziale Kompetenz der Studierenden, Mitarbeiter und Lehrenden hervor und lobte das außergewöhnliche Studienangebot, mit dem sich die HfG als leistungsstarke Lehr- und Forschungsstätte etablieren konnte. Gewürdigt wurden außerdem die moderne Organisationsstruktur der Hochschule sowie die zahlreichen Kooperation mit internationalen Bildungseinrichtungen, ganz besonders aber mit dem benachbarten ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie.

STUDIUM
 
An der HfG Karlsruhe werden fünf Studiengänge angeboten, vier Praxisstudiengänge und ein Theoriestudiengang:

Innerhalb der Praxisstudiengänge werden außerdem folgende Fächer unterrichtet:

Die vier Praxisstudiengänge schließen mit einer Diplomprüfung ab (Dipl.-Des.), der Theoriestudiengänge Kunstwissenschaft und Medienhilosophie mit dem Magister phil. Die Theoriefächer Kunstwissenschaft und Medienphilosophie können weiterführen zur Promotion (Dr. phil.). An der HfG Karlsruhe werden keine Bachelor-/Master-Studiengänge angeboten, es herrscht die akademische Freiheit nicht-modularisierter Studiengänge. Diplom, Magister, Promotion – die Abschlüsse an der Staatlichen Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe werden heute und in Zukunft international anerkannt, die volle Bologna-Kompatibilität ist gewährleistet.

Für die Studierenden der Theoriefächer ist, anders als an den Universitäten, die Wahl eines Praxisnebenfachs obligatorisch. Die Studierenden der Praxisfächer sind zum Studium eines Theoriefachs wie Kunstwissenschaft oder Medienphilosophie als Nebenfach verpflichtet.

Voraussetzung für die Zulassung zum Studium ist die allgemeine oder fachgebundene Hochschulreife sowie die erfolgreiche Ablegung einer Aufnahmeprüfung.

Die vier Praxisstudiengänge der HfG sind durchlässige Studienfelder, die intensive Bezüge zu anderen Fächern zulassen und je nach Forschungs- und Entwicklungsschwerpunkt der beteiligten Hochschullehrer unterschiedliche Akzentuierungen erfahren. Die medientheoretische Analyse durchdringt die Praxisveranstaltungen, andererseits wird die medientheoretische und kunstwissenschaftliche Ausbildung durch einen unmittelbaren Praxisbezug konkretisiert.

The Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG) was opened on the 15th of April 1992. Between 1989 and 1992, Prof. Dr. Heinrich Klotz established the University and the Center for Art and Media (ZKM). This unique connection between academic, research and exhibiting institution corresponds to the new artistic and educational assignment, to apply traditional arts on media technologies and electronic manufacturing processes.

Prof. Dr. Peter Sloterdijk took over the rector’s post at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design in 2001: “The program at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design does not refer to definite tendencies and directions in Practice and in Theory of Arts or even the style concept. The democratic structure of society and also modern communication systems make such predefinitions and Dogmas impossible. The basis of learning and teaching at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design is pluralistic open-mindedness.”

On January 28th the German Council of Science and Humanities attested the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design an excellent education concept during a comprehensive university evaluation. In its valuation a special emphasis was layed on the capacity for innovation, flexibility and social competence of the students, associates and teachers and praised the extraordinary diversity of offered courses, with which the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design was able to establish a high-performance institution for teaching and research. The modern organisational structure of the University and the various cooperations with international Institutions for teaching but especially the cooperation with the neighboured ZKM (Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe) was highly valued.

ACADEMIC STUDIES

There are five degree programs at the Karlsruhe University for Arts and Design, four of the five being applied programs and one being a theory program.

Within the applied programs the following courses are additionally taught:

The four applied programs terminate in a Diploma examination (Dipl.-Des.), the theory programs Art Research and Media Philosophy terminates in the Magister Phil. (MA). The theory programs Art Research and Media Philosophy can be continued to a Conferral of a Doctorate (Dr. Phil.).

Unlike other Universities, the programs of the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design require interdisciplinary studies. For students of the theory-programs, it is mandatory to choose one practice-program. For students of the practice programs, it is obligatory to take course in either Art Research or Media Philosophy as a minor subject.

To study at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design, the “allgemeine” or “fachgebundene Hochschulreife” (university entrance qualification) and successfully taking the entrance examination is prerequisite.

The Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design’s four practice-programs are open programs that allow intense references to other programs and contain various accentuations, depending on the emphases of research and development of the involved Teachers. The media theoretical analysis interfuses the experience-oriented programs and on the other side the media theoretical and art historical education is substantiated through a direct experience-oriented reference.
